Career Spotlight Interview

Are you in the same position that you joined the company? If not, tell us a little about the change and what influenced it?

"I started my career here as an associate engineer, mainly working in HDGL as a process engineer. I had the opportunity to move into the strategic projects team and investigate the potential of bringing a primary steelmaking facility here to Calvert." Now that we have broken ground on the steelmaking facility's construction, I will be responsible for preparing our operations and maintenance teams to start up the facility safely and efficiently while integrating our new asset with existing processes (purchasing, quality, IT, etc.) on-site.

What is a characteristic, trait, or belief that helps define who you are?

The AM/NS core value of sustainability is important to me. I am excited to be working on a project that will make AM/NS a large recycler of steel scrap and is key to the group's carbonneutral 2050 goals. I also focus on sustainability in my personal relationships with family and coworkers by treating others with respect and striving to be genuine in all interactions.

What are your daily activities?

My daily activities include leading the planning and execution of manufacturing integration tasks like developing the new steelmaking facility's raw material strategy. Stakeholder orientation is also key for my role to ensure risks to our schedule and budget are identified early, and we are executing our project in a way that best achieves AM/NS Calvert's strategic goals.

What describes AM/NS Calvert for you?

AM/NS is most clearly described for me through the core value of teamwork. The diverse team at Calvert relies on each other to achieve continuous improvement. Whether it's through benchmarking, learnings from past experience, or creating new innovative solutions, our team members are always willing to contribute to the success of the team.

What is a characteristic, trait, or belief that helps define who you are?

From a technical perspective, I had practically zero metallurgical/steelmaking experience when I left school and have developed significantly in that area through my interactions with the highly knowledgeable and experienced team members we have at Calvert. I think the associate program and GEDP process has been beneficial for my professional development and allowed me to understand better my strengths and weaknesses in communication, stakeholder orientation, and leadership. I'm grateful for the opportunity Calvert has given me to develop in these areas.

Currently, we are preparing for construction of the Steelmaking Facility. How meaningful is it to you personally and in your career to be on this project?

The steelmaking project is highly important to me as evaluating and planning it has now been the focus of over half of my career. The opportunities I have been given to improve my steelmaking knowledge have been tremendous, but I recognize the insight into the broader strategic goals of our business as a rare opportunity for someone early in their career. While simply getting the project approved was an achievement, successfully executing and ramping up our operations over the next few years is key for me personally and critical for Calvert's sustainability.

"AM/NS Calvert has positively impacted my career, and I believe it will do the same for anyone willing to join a fast paced, diverse work environment. Our site is relatively young and still experiencing some growing pains, but that gives team members with leadership skills more influence to make AM/NS Calvert the workplace it has the potential to be."
