Quality Control Specialist

Created in February 2014 through a 50/50 joint venture of the world’s largest and second largest steelmakers, ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation, AM/NS Calvert is located in Calvert, Ala. Our state-of-the-art steel processing facility has the capacity to process 5.3 million tons of high-value steel grades including hot rolled bands, hot rolled pickled and oiled, cold rolled, and advanced coated products for the automotive, pipe and tube, appliance/HVAC, service center and construction industries in the NAFTA market.

AM/NS Calvert products are marketed in NAFTA through managing joint venture partner ArcelorMittal.

The ideal candidate will provide support to the CMMD (Control of Monitoring and Measuring Devices) functions at Hot Dip Galvanizing and Finishing Lines. This will be accomplished through creating and implementing processes and improvements within the highly automated Hot Dip Galvanizing Lines to meet the business goals of AM/NS Calvert. 

The Basics:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Demonstrated knowledge of calibrations and verifications on measuring equipment
  • Demonstrate ability to complete, inspect & interpret measuring equipment and data and failure analysis on equipment
  • Support equipment troubleshooting
  • Knowledge of customer processes including forming and stamping
  • Strong knowledge of quality systems and processes
  • Training/presentation skills
  • Experience/proficiency in working directly with customers and vendors
  • Basic understanding of upstream steelmaking processes
  • Software proficiency with SAP; SQL (or other query formats), statistical tools, and data analysis
  • Practical experience working in steel production
  • Basic knowledge of Automotive products and quality standards
  • Advanced experience with computers and ability to learn new programs
  • Support budget creation and purchase requisitions to maintain CMMD functions in department
  • Support continuous improvement projects in CMMD through SAP integrating areas of maintenance, purchasing, and receiving

The Extras:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Industrial, or Chemical Engineering
  • Combination of post-secondary education and related experience
  • Prefer 5+ years of experience in steel production or quality related field

  • Coordinates and ensures progression and completion of HDGL corrective actions and A3’s
  • Maintain and perform verifications and calibrations on measuring devices
  • Creates and carries out improvement projects and recommend use of new equipment and upgrades
  • Disposition of HDGL & Finishing instruments (analyzes processing data, re-inspection data, and retest data to maintain calibration records)
  • Participates in and supports international standards and customer-based audits
  • Generates reports and data for instrument issues and performs quality analysis. Develops and improve on current methods
  • Maintains investigations and responses to verification / calibration analysis
  • Carries out improvement projects
  • Generates various HDGL/FL quality reporting and data as required
  • Daily liaison with operations/logistics. Incorporates needs into the above training program
  • Liaison with outside vendors and suppliers to schedule and manage on and off-site calibration services.
  • Create, manage, and maintain purchase requisition and process for new equipment and annual services.

  • Days, Monday to Friday with extended hours as required due to periods of peak workloads
