Automation Specialist

Created in February 2014 through a 50/50 joint venture of the world’s largest and second largest steelmakers, ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation, AM/NS Calvert is located in Calvert, AL.  Our state-of-the-art steel processing facility has the capacity to process 5.3 million tons of high-value steel grades including hot rolled bands, hot rolled pickled and oiled, cold rolled, and advanced coated products for the automotive, pipe and tube, appliance/HVAC, service center and construction industries in the NAFTA market.  

AM/NS Calvert products are marketed in NAFTA through managing joint venture partner ArcelorMittal.

 

 

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Design, implement, and test changes to HMI systems and PLCs
  • Support the Level 1 Team with technical knowledge and experience of process and automation.

 

ACCOUNTABILITIES:  

  • Take lead in analyzing and troubleshooting maintenance and production/process issues utilizing iba, HMI, Step 7, and LogiCAD
  • Ensure a continual improvement of all responsible systems by evaluating hardware and logic.
  • Ensure readiness of the backup systems
  • Support Quality, Engineers, Operations, Level II, and fellow Maintenance personnel in problem analysis and continuous improvement projects
  • Responsible for scheduling, planning (working with planning department), and execution of short/long term corrective and preventive maintenance activities
  • Prepare and attend daily meetings on maintenance, quality, and production activities
  • Train teammates on troubleshooting techniques utilizing iba, Step 7, and LogiCAD
  • Analyze and improve alarm system used by PLCs and Wonderware HMI
  • Develop dedicated HMI screens for fault messaging and interlocks for each production section
  • Develop and optimize event logger in Wonderware HMI

EDUCATION & ACCREDITATION:

  • B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university, or equal Steel Mill electrical experience preferred but not required or combination of post-secondary education/experience
  • Completed coursework in electrical maintenance, programming and/or automation.
  • 1 year in an industrial environment is preferred

 

KNOWLEDGE:   

  • Basic knowledge in reading, programming, and troubleshooting function block and ladder logic/SCL.
  • Basic knowledge in SAP and iba (or a similar operating system).
  • Basic electrical hardware knowledge (i.e. pressure/position transducers, encoders, etc.)
  • Experience in software development (e.g. Assembly language/machine code, C++)
  • Exposure to automation systems and shop floor processes in Steel manufacturing
  • Experience with hardware tuning and troubleshooting a plus

HOURS OF WORK:

  • Days, Monday to Friday with extended hours as required due to periods of peak workloads
