Environmental Engineer

Created in February 2014 through a 50/50 joint venture of the world’s largest and second largest steelmakers, ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation, AM/NS Calvert is located in Calvert, AL.  Our state-of-the-art steel processing facility has the capacity to process 5.3 million tons of high-value steel grades including hot rolled bands, hot rolled pickled and oiled, cold rolled, and advanced coated products for the automotive, pipe and tube, appliance/HVAC, service center and construction industries in the NAFTA market.  

AM/NS Calvert products are marketed in NAFTA through managing joint venture partner ArcelorMittal.

 

 

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Support site environmental compliance with applicable permits related to air, water, waste, or other regulatory requirements
  • Develop and improve Environmental policies and procedures for new process line(s) that will be consistent with world class programs including electronic data management for environmental monitoring
  • Perform Environmental Compliance Management of large construction projects including construction stormwater and construction contractor adherence to environmental regulations.             

 

ACCOUNTABILITIES:      

  • Leads a diverse set of environmental permitting projects including air quality, water quality, and residual waste
  • Reviews proposed permit conditions and makes recommendations
  • Effectively communicates and implements regulatory requirements and permit conditions
  • Prepares, reviews, and submits required external and internal reports
  • Performs monitoring and inspections for local, state, and federal enforceable permits and other regulations
  • Develops and obtains variances or alternative operating conditions to protect site from enforcement actions
  • Investigates incidents (air deviations, water violations, waste issues), determines root cause, and works with mills to implement corrective actions
  • Reports deviations or exceedances to applicable regulatory agencies as required by permits or other applicable requirements
  • Evaluates and identifies environmental compliance issues, federal, state, and local   
  • Fulfills the commitment to ensure a safe and healthy work environment
  • Fulfills the responsibilities required to achieve the Quality Commitment
  • Demonstrates commitment to teamwork by fostering an environment that embodies trust and respect
  • Ensure working knowledge of competencies as defined in ISO 14001:2015, IATF 16949:2016 and ISO 17025:2017 

 

EDUCATION & ACCREDITATION:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Chemical, Environmental, Civil), Environmental Management, Chemistry, Biology, or other related field, or combination of post-secondary education and related experience       

 

KNOWLEDGE:   

  • Must have a broad understanding of commonly employed engineering principles, environmental and safety requirements, and familiarity in working with local, state, and federal agencies
  • Desire 7-10 years’ experience interpreting standards, rules and regulations, and how they related to the organizations processes, facilities, and equipment
  • Experience with environmental compliance of greenfield construction activities such as construction stormwater and managing contractor compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Must have experience interpreting standards, rule, and regulations including:  EPA, ADEM, DOT, OSHA, etc.
  • Must have experience working on a diverse set of environmental permitting projects including air quality, water quality, and waste management
  • Must have experience implementing Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001)

 

SKILLS: 

  • Proficient with MS Office tools, SAP, Enviance, and SharePoint

 

  • Demonstrates strong decision-making, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Able to competently handle a fast-paced environment, with strong organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritizing skills
  • Ability to deal sensitively with confidential material
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal communications skills, written and verbal
  • Demonstrates strong work ethic and displays a high degree of professionalism
  • Interest and ability to work at our site location in Calvert, Alabama

HOURS OF WORK:

  • Days, Monday to Friday with extended hours as required due to periods of peak workloads
