Environmental Engineer
Created in February 2014 through a 50/50 joint venture of the world’s largest and second largest steelmakers, ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation, AM/NS Calvert is located in Calvert, Ala. Our state-of-the-art steel processing facility has the capacity to process 5.3 million tons of high-value steel grades including hot rolled bands, hot rolled pickled and oiled, cold rolled, and advanced coated products for the automotive, pipe and tube, appliance/HVAC, service center and construction industries in the NAFTA market.
AM/NS Calvert products are marketed in NAFTA through managing joint venture partner ArcelorMittal.
DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?
The ideal candidate will provide strong environmental air quality compliance and sustainability knowledge and skills to maintain the site’s environmental and regulatory compliance while complimenting the environmental team’s environmental stewardship activities.
The Basics:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering (Chemical, Environmental, Civil, Mechanical, Environmental Management), Chemistry, Biology, other related field, or combination of post-secondary education and related experience
- A minimum of 3 years of experience interpreting environmental air standards, rules, and regulations; how they are related to the organizations processes, facilities, and equipment
- Broad understanding of commonly employed engineering principles, environmental and safety requirements, and familiarity in working with local, state and federal agencies
- Experience with environmental compliance of greenfield construction activities such as construction stormwater permits and managing contractor compliance with environmental regulations
- Must have experience interpreting standards, rules, and regulations including EPA, ADEM, USACE, DOT, etc.
- Must have environmental air permitting experience across a diverse set of construction/expansion projects
- Experience in working in a fast-paced, manufacturing/industry environment
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs
The Extras:
- 5+ years of experience strongly preferred
- Proficient with SAP preferred
- Steel industry technical knowledge
- Experience with ISO-14001 EMS auditing

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
- Air quality permitting and compliance, greenhouse gas emissions compliance, general regulatory compliance, and various permitting for expansion projects
- Technical work may include completing calculations, reviewing compliance issues, preparing permitting documentation, reporting writing and reviewing; data, research, and reports
- Maintain current and create new work instructions and procedures for environmental pollution control equipment
- Identify and execute regulatory air compliance strategies that bring the most value to AM/NS Calvert
- Be the focal point for air quality compliance and permitting; coordinating permitting elements with operations, project management, consultants, and regulatory agencies
- Preparing, reviewing, and submitting required external and internal reports
- Monitoring and inspection of contractors for environmental related compliance with the contractor’s environmental management plan
- Develop and obtain variances or alternative operating conditions to protect site from enforcement actions
- Investigating environmental incidents using casual learning and root cause failure analysis to implement corrective actions
- Leading or participating in continuous improvement accountabilit8ies
- Reporting deviations or exceedances to applicable regulatory agencies as required by permits and other applicable requirements
