Mechanic - Hydraulic Technician

Created in February 2014 through a 50/50 joint venture of the world’s largest and second largest steelmakers, ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel Corporation, AM/NS Calvert is located in Calvert, AL.  Our state-of-the-art steel processing facility has the capacity to process 5.3 million tons of high-value steel grades including hot rolled bands, hot rolled pickled and oiled, cold rolled, and advanced coated products for the automotive, pipe and tube, appliance/HVAC, service center and construction industries in the NAFTA market.  

AM/NS Calvert products are marketed in NAFTA through managing joint venture partner ArcelorMittal.



OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY/PURPOSE OF POSITION: Analyzes reasons for production disturbances in cooperation with other maintenance and production personnel. Troubleshoots unscheduled maintenance issues. Researches, Develops, and Coordinates Work Orders through completion.



  1. Maintains equipment, parts, and supplies inventories by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed equipment, parts, and supplies
  2. Assists in the development and implementation of policies, standards and procedures for the hydraulic work performed in the department
  3. Prepares and presents reports and findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends
  4. Applies fluid power theory and related knowledge to test and troubleshoot operational industrial hydraulic systems and applications
  5. Reads industrial application schematics, does cylinder & hydraulic motor calculations
  6. Performs inspections of hydraulic systems, components and piping
  7. Able to supervise system maintenance, installations and commissioning
  8. Recommends modifications to circuit and components to improve performance and reliability
  9. Troubleshoots, adjusts and helps maintain machinery and mechanical equipment
  10. Observes safety, review accident/incident reports and assist in investigations as required
  11. Coordinates, trains, and leads maintenance technicians for special tasks and responsibilities
  12. Supports, participates in, and develops improvement programs and project groups
  13. Supports management in optimizing quality, cost, availability and performance of equipment
  14. Perform and assist in Lock Out Try Out of equipment, systems, and sub-systems
  15. Coordinates and directs personnel as required
  16. On-call duty rotation responsibilities

EDUCATION, ACCREDITATION & EXPERIENCE: Technical expertise / years of experience in the field

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Associates Degree in related field preferred
  • Formal Hydraulic Fluid Power Training
  • Hydraulic Fluid Power Certification
  • At least 5 years of experience in Hydraulic Fluid Power field


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: Knowledge / Skills required

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Hydraulic Fluid Power practices
  • Hydraulic Maintenance Knowledge of heavy industrial equipment
  • Technical knowledge of Hydraulic systems; cylinders, servo valves, piping, hose connections, filtration, etc.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) Practices
  • Knowledge of Predictive Maintenance techniques and analysis
  • Knowledge of Fluid Sampling and Tribology
  • Technical Writing skills
  • Mechanical/Electrical aptitude
  • Computer skills to include Microsoft Office and SAP
  • Data trending software skills (IBA preferred)
  • Demonstrates strong decision-making, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Able to competently handle a fast-paced environment, with strong organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritizing skills
  • Ability to deal sensitively with confidential material
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal communications skills, written and verbal
  • Demonstrates strong work ethic and displays a high degree of professionalism
  • Interest and ability to work at our site location in Calvert, Alabama
