The ideal candidate for Mechanical Maintenance Area Manager of Steel Making will initially play a critical role in the Mechanical design, construction, and start-up phases of our brand-new Electric Arc Furnace, Ladle Metallurgy Furnace, Vacuum Tank Degassing, Caster, Bag House, and associated support equipment. This candidate will be directly accountable for the Mechanical reliability of equipment and process of the carbon steel melt shop and casting operations, and for the leadership of the Mechanical Maintenance team.


The Basics:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business or related field
  • Experience in Green or Brownfield Steel Mill startups
  • At least 10 years of leadership experience in maintenance position in steel manufacturing
  • Experience with improvement projects that increased reliability, throughput, yield or generated cost savings
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build relationships at all levels of the organization
  • Advanced decision-making and problem-solving skills; Analytical skills, with ability to collect, distill, and analyze data
  • Technical proficiency with:
    • Combustion systems, burners, injectors, etc
    • Vacuum pumps and systems
    • Material Handling Systems; conveyors, hoppers, silos, weighing systems, etc
    • Crane Maintenance
    • Maintenance of utilities, water systems, hydraulic/pneumatic systems, etc


The Extras:

  • Experience with World Class Manufacturing, Lean, or Reliability Centered Maintenance implementation
  • Knowledge of Electric Arc Furnace, Ladle Metallurgy Facility, Vacuum Tank Degasser, Caster, and/or Bag House maintenance




  1. Leading People:
    • Build a new high performing Mechanical Maintenance Team; specify roles/responsibilities/skills, identify, interview, and select successful candidates
    • Lead Maintenance team in performance management, succession planning, resource allocation, and skills development
    • Accountability for motivation, retention, development, and training of team members
    • Ensure a safe and healthy work environment by assessing potential hazards and ensuring completion of all necessary training
    • Model and encourage the company values of Safety, Teamwork, Accountability, Relationships, and Sustainability
    • Drives standard work processes, KPI visibility, accountability, and action planning across organization
  2. Achieving Business Goals:
    • Accountable for achieving Key Performance Indicators established in the business plan (safety, reliability, throughput, quality, cost)
    • Accountable for development, implementation, and adherence to the Equipment Maintenance Program
    • Development and adherence to the Repair and Maintenance budget
    • Benchmark performance against similar facilities to identify improvement opportunities
    • Drive business planning, budgeting, budget control



  • Looking ahead to future possibilities and translating them into breakthrough strategies
  • Anticipating and balancing the needs of multiple stakeholders
  • Developing people to meet both their career goals and the organization’s goals

  • Office and Industrial setting in the Melt Shop
  • Construction environment (initially)
  • Gulf coast region in Calvert, AL
  • Days, Monday to Friday with extended hours as required due to periods of peak workloads, particularly during construction and start up phases



  • Reports to General Manager Steelmaking
  • Reports Include:
    • Direct – Mechanical Maintenance Engineers and Specialists
    • Indirect – Hourly Maintenance Mechanics / Millwrights
