Melting & Refining Operations Shift Manager - Steelmaking

Position will have two phases – Initial Project Execution/Start Up (~ 1.5 years); Operations once project complete. Responsible for the melting refining operations during the shift. Lead training of operators and development of operational procedures. Responsible for health & safety, quality & environment, and shift team management for assigned team.


The Basics:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, Management, or similar field; or equivalent experience leading a team in a mill environment
  • Minimum of High school diploma or GED required
  • 3 - 5 years of experience Steel industry in management, engineering, or similar position
  • OR 6 - 10 years of experience in heavy industrial environment, including 3 - 5 years of experience in management position
  • Experience in motivating and driving individuals toward a win-win situation
  • Management skills to lead a shift team in full autonomy
  • Demonstrate high accountability and leading by example
  • Ability to work in an operation team environment
  • Results-driven with capability of dealing with uncertainty
  • Advanced process control knowledge
  • Computer skills to include Microsoft Office

Project Execution and Startup Phase:

  1. Perform construction site safety walkthroughs and establish supervisor safety contacts
  2. Lead training of operations staff and development of operational procedures prior to startup
  3. Perform miscellaneous tasks to support construction activities including drone mapping for construction progress tracking
  4. Evaluate and interview candidates for operators positions during hiring process
  5. Ensure HIRAC safety reviews are performed for operating procedures and contribute to them
  6. Ensure development of energy control procedures which meet operational needs
  7. Perform operational early equipment management reviews of OEM equipment
  8. Contribute to development of equipment commissioning plan and factory acceptance testing (performance guarantees)


Operations Phase:

Health, Safety, Environment, & Quality

  1. Responsible for Safety, Quality, Environmental and Production of melting refining operations team for the shift
  2. Lead or participate in incident root cause analysis and corrective actions for major failures: safety incident, environmental deviation, quality deviation, production loss
  3. Investigates safety, quality, environmental and production incidents during shift
  4. Check and ensure melting refining comply with environmental regulations
  5. Ensure operators are appropriately trained to perform duties

Team Management

  1. Lead shift team to achieve melting refining performance: production, cost, & quality KPIs
  2. Communicate and provide leadership and vision to melting refining operators
  3. Demonstrate and promote AM/NS Calvert Purpose and Values: Safety, Teamwork, Accountability, Relationships, and Sustainability
  4. Organize the shift work schedule, coordinating vacations and replacements as needed
  5. Evaluate performance of operators and take actions to develop their skills including disciplinary correctives actions
  6. Ensure housekeeping is performed by the team in the workplace at any time

Performance Management

  1. Identify appropriate counter measure in case of non-achievement of performance targets, including issues generating chemistry of liquid steel
  2. Follow up melting refining process parameters, identify deviations to standard and implement corrective measures
  3. Trouble shoot equipment to limit unplanned outage time
  4. Interface with Caster and Refractory for the overall benefit of steelmaking mill
  5. Communicate and plan with the maintenance team the maintenance needs of melting refining
  6. Organize scraps and slag activities with contractor
  7. Report data and take actions as needed or directed by upper management
  8. Provide resources to engineers and specialists for achieving their objectives
  9. Lead or participate in continuous improvement activities



  • Office and Industrial setting in the Steel Making facility
  • During first ~2 years, Construction setting
  • Gulf coast region in Calvert, AL
  • Shift:
    • During project phase: Days, Monday to Friday with extended hours as required due to periods of peak workloads. Exceptionally on weekend for special circumstances
    • During operations phase: Rotating 12-hour shift rotation to include nights, weekend, and holidays
  • People with heart pacemakers or any there electronic medical device are strictly prohibited  from entering the furnace area. These devices include implanted pacemakers or implantable cardiac defibrillators where the device may be affected.  Individuals identified to potentially work in EMF affected areas should identify the specific device they have as part of a medical history and manufacturer’s recommendations should be followed.
