Technician, Crane (Maintenance)

Created in February 2014 through a 50/50 joint venture of the world’s largest and second largest steelmakers, ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel Corporation, AM/NS Calvert is located in Calvert, AL.  Our state-of-the-art steel processing facility has the capacity to process 5.3 million tons of high-value steel grades including hot rolled bands, hot rolled pickled and oiled, cold rolled, and advanced coated products for the automotive, pipe and tube, appliance/HVAC, service center and construction industries in the NAFTA market.  

AM/NS Calvert products are marketed in NAFTA through managing joint venture partner ArcelorMittal.



OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY: Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on all cranes within the facility. Use work orders to determine daily work schedule.



  • Provide support for the installation, startup and commissioning of new equipment
  • Perform crane maintenance, inspections, repairs and troubleshooting activities
  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with team and company policies and procedures
  • Provide program improvements for maintaining proactive lifting and handling support
  • Provide and support Lifting and Handling equipment repairs, inspection and maintenance activities
  • Work proactively with all customers to optimize lifting and handling equipment availability
  • Support EH&S and mill teams on investigations for incidents and critiques related to L&H equipment
  • Ensure working knowledge of competencies as defined in ISO 9001:2008 Team Member Competency Form

  • Ensure working knowledge of competencies as defined in ISO 14001 (current version), IATF 16949 (current version), and ISO 17025 (current version)



  • 2-5 years of experience working within a formal proactive crane maintenance program
  • 2-5 years of experience on Overhead and gantry cranes



  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Secondary training/education desired



  • Familiar with ASME, OSHA, CMAA specifications related to Lifting and Handling Equipment
  • General knowledge of preventive and predictive maintenance practices for lifting and handling equipment
  • Must have fundamental knowledge of mechanical systems and components
  • Must have a good working knowledge of electrical systems and Variable Frequency Drives



  • Be able to read and understand drawings and schematics
  • Must have Basic computer skills
  • Must be familiar with lock-out try out procedures and policies
  • Have knowledge of crane control and Variable Frequency Drive systems
  • Have working knowledge of OSHA crane safety and inspection requirements
  • Must know how to properly use mechanical and electrical hand tools as well as test equipment
  • Demonstrates strong decision-making, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Able to competently handle a fast-paced environment, with strong organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritizing skills
  • Ability to deal sensitively with confidential material
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal communications skills, written and verbal
  • Demonstrates strong work ethic and displays a high degree of professionalism
  • Interest and ability to work at our site location in Calvert, Alabama 



  • Predictive Maintenance experience, i.e. Vibration Analysis, Thermography, Laser Alignment, Oil Analysis, etc.
  • Working Knowledge of Windows Office tools, including Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, Project, and PowerPoint
  • Functional knowledge/ Understanding of SAP, RMMS and CMMS programs



  • Mill Environment



  • Days, Monday to Friday with extended hours as required due to periods of peak workloads
