The role:

ArcelorMittal Global Research & Development Automotive Product Application Center is looking for a highly skilled and motivated engineer to provide technical expertise to solve complicated stamping problems and provide customer support, while contributing and maintaining ArcelorMittal’s long-term technical leadership in this field. The engineer would identify and manage the implementation of material and process cost savings opportunities in customer stamping plants throughout North America as well as assisting in achieving a number 1 rating in overall customer technical support. 

 

Job Duties:

  • Provide customers with support in forming strain analysis, early vendor involvement (EVI), and die development for ArcelorMittal products.
  • Perform strain analysis and thickness strain analysis in the die shops and stamping plants of AM North American customers (often requiring travel on short notice) and prepare reports on forming analysis on a timely basis and recommend production tooling changes to customers as required.
  • Respond to customer requests for forming advice and assistance at pre-launch, launch, and production phases of vehicle lifecycle.
  • Work with ArcelorMittal Technical Service Managers to quickly and cost effectively correct forming related problems to mitigate customer claims.
  • Maintain expertise in identifying and implementing material and process cost savings opportunities during pre-launch, launch, and production phases of vehicle lifecycle.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of customer cost savings systems, so our efforts are efficiently maximized relative to the customer ratings systems.
  • Establish sustainable, positive relationships in customer stamping plants that facilitate prioritization and implementation of ArcelorMittal NA cost savings or manufacturing improvement ideas.
  • Ensure a long-term technical leadership position relative to our competition by identifying industry stamping trends and initiating and executing AM FCA activities and knowledge transfer between the customer and ArcelorMittal.
  • Maintain an expert level of forming strain analysis and stamping process knowledge to resolve complex stamping problems.
  • Adhere to and fulfill all employee responsibilities set out in the ArcelorMittal Health and Safety Policy program.
  • Adhere to and fulfill all employee responsibilities set out in the Code of Business Conduct and Policies of ArcelorMittal and complete all required compliance trainings thereunder.

 

Education Requirements: 

Bachelors in Materials or Mechanical Engineering with related experience in the automotive or steel industry.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, particularly with stamping and press systems, roll forming, and hydroforming is required.
  • Working knowledge of tool and dies and the parameters that impact formability is required.
  • Knowledge of automotive steel material grades and manufacturing processes, and their mechanical properties is required.
  • Knowledge of customer cost savings systems is required.
  • Working knowledge of joining processes (welding, bonding, etc.) and manufacturing plant practices is required.
  • Working knowledge of Design-Of-Experiment is required.
  • General knowledge in interpreting Finite Element Analysis forming simulation and optimization results is required.
  • General knowledge of the automotive OEM manufacturing processes is required.
  • General knowledge of health and safety issues in heavy manufacturing industries is required.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Good degree of mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience is required.
  • Good organizational and time-management skills are required.
  • Good ability to work effectively in a team environment is required.
  • Proven ability to evaluate an opportunity, develop and execute a course of action using work plans, to accomplish the deliverables timely and accurately is required.
  • Proven ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision is required.
  • Good negotiation skills are required.
  • Good personnel computer, standard corporate software applications and applicable systems skills are required.
  • Knowledge of the ARGUS sheet metal forming system is a plus.
