The role: 

ArcelorMittal Global R&D is seeking a highly skilled and motivated engineer/scientist with a strong Steelmaking background and proven record of accomplishments in the Development and Application of steel refining processes. The candidate should have a strong background in thermodynamics and kinetics and good working knowledge of basic oxygen furnace, electric arc furnace, ladle furnace, secondary refining, and vacuum degassing technologies with an overall understanding of plant operations on liquid steel handling.  The prospective candidate will work independently and collectively with project teams to develop processing solutions and design and conduct research experiments involving laboratory or industrial trials related to Steelmaking, Secondary Metallurgy and Casting. The job will be based in the East Chicago center of ArcelorMittal Global R&D but will support ArcelorMittal plants and research projects globally. Projects will have a global perspective where interaction with other ArcelorMittal R&D laboratories or plant personnel is expected. Prospective candidate is expected to coordinate planning, budgeting, scheduling, and identifying resources required for project execution. A high level of technical competency, teamwork, project management skills and excellent interpersonal skills is required for being successful for this position. Travel both domestic and international is also a requirement of the position.

Job Duties:

The prospective candidate will apply first principles and problem solving techniques to evaluate and develop solutions to maximize steel manufacturing efficiencies. Prospective candidate will:

  • Be responsible in leading development of process solutions that help improve steelmaking operations, quality, yield and costs but also identify innovative practices from other fields that can be applied for process development for new product manufacturability.
  • Work with R&D and plant personnel in global ArcelorMittal locations to develop new and continuously improve technology and practices of steelmaking, ladle metallurgy, particularly involving process optimization, quality improvement and cost reduction;
  • Generate and present intermediate and final technical reports relating to research and projects;
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

Experience Requirements

Minimum/Basic Requirements:

  • Strong knowledge of thermodynamics and kinetics of liquid steel processing;
  • Good knowledge of Steelmaking processes including BOF, LMF, Vacuum Degassing and Continuous Casting;
  • Strong mathematical modeling skills, and working knowledge of using software programming tools to execute projects;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work safely in a lab research and manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of additive metal powder production will be a plus.
  • An inherent passion for innovation and discovery.

 

Preferred Requirements:

Specific research experience in the steelmaking field

 

Educational Requirements

Minimum/Basic Requirements:

PhD in Materials Science, Metallurgical, Chemical Engineering, or Powder Metallurgy

 

Preferred Requirements

At least 5 Years of experience in metals manufacturing;  experience in chemical metallurgy or additive manufacturing.
