The role:
ArcelorMittal Global R&D is seeking for a highly skilled and motivated engineer with a strong background in numerical and physical modeling and a proven record of accomplishments in the development and application of solutions for manufacturing industries. The candidate must have strong knowledge in modeling of thermochemical, thermomechanical, and fluid mechanical systems, with an overall understanding of manufacturing operations in steel or a related industry. The prospective candidate will work independently and collectively with project teams to develop processing solutions using numerical modeling tools and developing and application of physical models. The job will be based in the East Chicago center of ArcelorMittal Global R&D but will support plants in global locations. Some projects will have a global perspective where interaction with other ArcelorMittal R&D laboratories or plant personnel is expected. Prospective candidate is expected to coordinate planning, budgeting, scheduling, and identifying resources required for project execution. A high level of technical competence, teamwork, project management skills and excellent interpersonal skills is required for being successful for this position. Travel both domestic and international is also a requirement of the position.

Job Duties:
The prospective candidate will apply first principles and problem solving techniques to evaluate and develop solutions to maximize steel manufacturing efficiencies. Prospective candidate will:

Be responsible in leading development of complex models using numerical modeling to develop process solutions that help improve steel manufacturing operations, quality, yield and costs but also identify innovative practices from other fields that can be applied for process development for new product manufacturability.

Work with R&D and plant personnel globally to develop new and continuously improve technology and practices of steelmaking, ladle metallurgy, casting, hot rolling, particularly involving process optimization, quality improvement and cost reduction;

Generate and present intermediate and final technical reports relating to research and projects;

Perform other duties as required.
Experience Requirements
Minimum/Basic Requirements:
- Strong knowledge of CFD tools – CAD, Ansys and Openfoam;
- Good background in development of physical models – running and executing project using new physical models is a plus
- Working knowledge of steel manufacturing processes including BOF, LMF, Vacuum Degassing, Continuous Casting, and hot rolling;
- Strong mathematical modeling skills, and working knowledge of using software programming tools to execute projects;
- Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
- Ability to work safely in a lab research and manufacturing environment.
- An inherent passion for innovation and discovery.
Preferred Requirements:
Specific research experience in the steelmaking field
Educational Requirements
Minimum/Basic Requirements:
MS in Mechanical, Chemical, Materials, Industrial, or Metallurgical Engineering
Preferred Requirements
At least 5 Years of experience in metals manufacturing with experience in modeling; Ph.D. preferred.
Other Requirements
Proven skills in the following areas will have added advantage:
- Database and Web applications including knowledge of Visual Studio, MS SQL Server, Oracle or Adobe Creative Suite;
- Python and Power BI
- Data Analytics and AI
- Mastery of English language skills
