The role:

ArcelorMittal is looking to hire an Engineer/Senior Engineer to work out of the Global Research & Development Center in East Chicago, IN. The successful candidate will conduct Research and provide technical support focused on promoting ArcelorMittal steel solutions in the current Energy markets (linepipe/OCTG) as well as the emerging Hydrogen Economy, in USA and Mexico, but will also back up solutions & applications initiatives in the Industry markets (yellow goods/green goods and heavy construction).


Prospective candidate is expected to provide support to address customer complaints/challenges and propose technical/technology development projects to enhance our service to the customer. A high level of technical competency, teamwork, project management skills and excellent interpersonal skills is required for being successful for this position. Travel, both domestic and international, will be required.


Job Duties:

Prospective candidate will:

  • Design and execute experiments simulating pipe making process using special equipment.
  • Oversee the mechanical testing of pipe samples using ring expansion tester.
  • Perform FEA modeling of different parts in service condition to optimize the material selection.
  • Make proposals on application of advanced materials for heavy industry machinery.
  • Enable ArcelorMittal to develop leading edge products that meet the customers’ current and future needs
  • Articulate customer material requirements to the Product Development team/committee and follow development through the stage gate process.
  • Work collaboratively with Quality, Technology, Operations and Commercial personnel, Global R&D colleagues and most importantly, with customers.
  • High level planning and communication throughout a wide range of stakeholders within customers and ArcelorMittal organizations
  • Work with the Global R&D team to enhance the materials database for steel products from ArcelorMittal as well as benchmarking competitor’s comparable products
  • Will travel to plants, customer locations as well as sister laboratories in the US and overseas.
  • Perform other duties as required.


Experience Requirements


Minimum/Basic Requirements:

  • Knowledge of steel manufacturing processes including steelmaking, continuous casting, and hot rolling.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with shared responsibilities and resources
  • Motivated, self-starter who can initiate and execute R&D project plans internally and externally with minimal supervision
  • Ability to organize and participate in technical seminars or conferences for large groups.
  • Strong Project management skills: demonstrated the ability to push projects over the finish line with sound planning and persistent implementation.


Preferred Requirements:

  • 2-5 years’ experience in steel or related process industry
  • Knowledge of FEA modeling
  • Knowledge of steel production, especially plate and HR sheet as well metal fabrication processes – forming, joining/welding.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis such as six sigma
  • Background in material supply industry helpful
  • Knowledge of at least one foreign language.
  • Ability to lead global teams through complex, high paced projects.
  • Familiarity with digital tools.


Educational Requirements

Minimum/Basic Requirements:

Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanics.


Preferred Requirements

PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanics.


Other Requirements

Proven skills in the following areas will have added advantage:

  • Ability/willingness to work in teams
  • Mastery of English language
  • Digitalization/Data Science
  • Additive Manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of process steps (design associated with industrial product life cycle and criteria for materials selection for different applications is desirable, as is the ability to develop finite element analytical tools for modeling of materials behavior and properties e.g., forming, bending.
