The role:

ArcelorMittal Global R&D is seeking a highly skilled and motivated engineer/scientist with a Steelmaking and Casting background and a proven record of Development of techno-economic models. The candidate should have a background in melting and casting of alloys, preferably in steels, with working knowledge of electric arc furnace, ladle furnace, secondary refining, and casting technologies with an overall understanding of issues in liquid steel handling. Strong background is required in creating models using mathematical algorithms about the processes that create value by improving the operability and reliability of operations thus creating an overall business value for internal plants. These techno-economic solutions should be generic yet adaptable to a specific plant process quickly.


The prospective candidate will work independently and collectively with project teams to develop economic solutions by using available tools. The job will be based in the East Chicago center of ArcelorMittal Global R&D but will support ArcelorMittal plants and research projects globally. Projects will have a global perspective where interaction with other ArcelorMittal R&D laboratories or plant personnel is expected. Prospective candidate is expected to coordinate planning, budgeting, scheduling, and identifying resources required for project execution. A high level of technical competency, teamwork, project management skills and excellent interpersonal skills is required for being successful for this position. Travel, both domestic and international, is a requirement of the position.                                                                                                                                                                                                                    


Job Duties:

The prospective candidate will apply first principles and problem-solving techniques to develop and modify techno-economic models to maximize steel manufacturing efficiencies, improve productivity, reduce costs and develop overall value-in-use for the manufacturing chain.


Prospective candidate will:

  • Be responsible for leading the development of economic models that help improve steelmaking operations, quality, yield and costs but also identify innovative technical practices from other engineering fields that can be applied for reducing costs in steelmaking manufacturability.
  • Work with R&D and plant personnel in global ArcelorMittal locations to develop new solutions for steelmaking, casting, quality improvement and cost reduction;
  • Generate and present intermediate and final technical reports relating to research and projects;
  • Perform other duties as required.


Experience Requirements


Minimum/Basic Requirements:

  • Strong knowledge of economics, computing algorithms, mathematics, statistics, and use of data processing to develop models;
  • Good technical knowledge of Steelmaking processes including EAF, LMF, Vacuum Degassing and Continuous Casting;
  • Good working knowledge of using software programming tools to develop techno-economic models to execute projects;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work safely in a laboratory research and manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of data mining, data trending and data forecasting will be a plus.
  • An inherent passion for continuous learning, innovation and discovery is needed to be successful.


Preferred Requirements:

  • Specific research experience in mathematics, and statistics, with a background in metallurgical processing and applications.


Educational Requirements

Minimum/Basic Requirements:

  • M.S. in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, with course work in Economics, Mathematics and/or statistical data usage;
  • Alternatively, M.S. in Economics, Mathematics/Statistics/data science with coursework in materials engineering and metals manufacturing.


Preferred Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Materials science, Metallurgical or Chemical Engineering with course work in Mathematics, Statistics, and Economics.
  • At least 2 Years of experience in metals manufacturing; solid experience techno-economic models development
