The role:

ArcelorMittal Global R&D is seeking a highly skilled and motivated engineer/scientist with Advanced Instrumentation and Mechatronics background to join our cross-functional team of professionals in developing smart manufacturing technologies and driving digital transformation of Steel Manufacturing. The candidate should have demonstrated experience and strong background in exploring a wide range of technology solutions combining electrical, mechanical, embedded systems and ability to work with software components. The prospective candidate will work independently and collectively with project teams to develop and implement measurement, instrumentation and control solutions, mechatronics, and embedded systems for ArcelorMittal plants.


The job will be based in the East Chicago center of ArcelorMittal Global R&D but will support ArcelorMittal plants and research projects globally. Some projects will have a global perspective where interaction with other ArcelorMittal R&D laboratories or plant personnel is expected. Prospective candidate is expected to coordinate planning, budgeting, scheduling, and identifying resources required for project execution. A high level of technical competency, teamwork, project management skills and excellent interpersonal skills is required for being successful for this position. Travel, both domestic and international, is a requirement of the position.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           



Job Duties:


The research engineer will be involved in several research activities in which he/she will have the responsibility to: 

  • Develop and prototype state of the art mechanisms, software and solutions for smart and wireless sensors for steel manufacturing process
  • Conceptualize, model, and drive the build and test of prototypes of novel electromechanical systems and embedded solutions.
  • Contribute in the growing of instrumentation team activities for advanced and smart sensors applications/industry 4.0 
  • Collaborate in a team environment across multiple engineering disciplines while dealing with a wide variety of application linked with metal processing 
  • Design, setup, and conduct combustion-related research experiments
  • Select, install, and utilize state-of-the art instrumentation to make precise measurements
  • Design and oversee fabrication and implementation of pilot facility research infrastructure
  • Plan, prepare, and execute experimental test plans
  • Author technical papers and attend technical conferences to brief current research
  • Perform other duties as required. 




Minimum/Basic Requirements:


  • Master in relevant discipline (mechatronics engineering, microsystems engineering, electrical engineering, robotics and others).
  • Good background in the measurement and instrumentation domain (large scope of physics and electrical background)
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work safely in a laboratory research and manufacturing environment.
  • An inherent passion for continuous learning, innovation and discovery is needed to be successful.


Preferred Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in mechatronics engineering, microsystems engineering, electrical engineering, robotics and others.
  • Experience working with heavy & large equipment in industrial settings
  • Prior technical knowledge of Steel Manufacturing processes and equipment including EAF, LMF, Vacuum Degassing, Continuous Casters, Reheat Furnaces, Annealing Furnaces, Rolling Mills etc is a plus;
  • Familiarity with Hot Dip Coating Line Instrumentation: Coating weight measurement and control, gage calibration and fabrication of coating standards, Induction furnace control system for Coating Line.
  • Temperature and Emissivity Measurement and Annealing Furnace control, Thermal imaging systems.
  • Portable OES and Portable XRF
  • Machine Vision and Smart Cameras systems
  • Experience with LabVIEW systems 
  • Experience in a programming language such as C++ (or C), MATLAB, Python will be a plus. 
  • Experience with rapid prototyping tools and methods.
  • Familiarity with industry-standard design tools including Solidworks, Aspen HYSYS, AutoCAD, or similar.
