Job Description: 

ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steel producer and a key player in the supply of automotive sheet steels of the future, is looking to hire an Engineer in the Coatings and Surface Technology Group of the Automotive Product Research Division in Global R&D East Chicago.  


Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

Provide the necessary understanding of the new steel products' surface or near-surface chemistry to permit the coating of the steel with zinc or aluminum-based coatings or coatings applied by our customers to either the bare or coated steel. Understand the effect of the process atmosphere or environment service atmosphere on the degradation of the products. Using scientific and engineering knowledge, transfer lab developments to production coating lines assisting in the launch of new products. In addition, the successful candidate must:


  • Work independently and in a team environment with engineers in other groups within East Chicago R&D and other ArcelorMittal R&D Labs.
  • Conceive projects in the areas of coatings and hydrogen degradation that will assist with the development of advanced steel products for ArcelorMittal customers.
  • Develop advanced analytical procedures for the characterization of coated steel products at various stages of production.
  • Develop digital models to better understand, develop and control product attributes.
  • Remain abreast of the current state-of-the-art in coated products and processes.
  • Manage assigned instrumentation to assure that it is kept in optimum working condition by actively monitoring usage and measurement performance against established protocols and standards.


Job Duties: 


The candidate will be responsible for:

  • Assisting new product development teams in assessing the new steel interactions with coatings;
  • Developing methods to reduce the impact of hydrogen on the performance of coated alloys by developing or modifying the current production practices for the continuous coating of zinc and zinc alloys and aluminum and aluminum alloys on the new steels. 
  • Thermodynamic modeling,performing related experiments in the laboratory and on production lines to improve the product characteristics. 
  • Leading investigations into coating and surface issues occurring at ArcelorMittal plants or customer plants. 
  • This position will require travel to ArcelorMittal facilities to lead plant trials and assist with the implementation of product improvements. 



Minimum Education Requirements: 

PhD in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Chemistry, or Physical Chemistry.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Experience with surface phenomena, chemistry, thermodynamics, and chemical reactions
  • Strong background in materials science, physics, chemistry, and/or related technical disciplines.
  • Working knowledge of Thermo-Calc, CALPHAD, or FactSage
  • Strong technical writing and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment with shared responsibilities.
  • Aptitude for problem solving and detail-oriented.
  • Motivated self-starter who can develop and carryout research programs with minimal supervision.



Preferred Requirements:     

  • Knowledge of coatings and coating processes
  • Knowledge of hydrogen embrittlement and techniques to understand the impact on product performance.
  • Knowledge of steel metallurgy.
  • Knowledge of XRD methods for characterization of materials
  • Strong knowledge of light and electron metallographic techniques.
  • Experience with metallic coatings such as hot dip zinc and hot dip aluminum.
  • Knowledge of surface treatments applied to steel or metallic coatings such as phosphate and paints.
  • Background with analytical techniques such as EDS, WDS, GD-OES, AES, XPS, SEM, TEM, FIB
