The role: 

We are seeking for a highly skilled and motivated engineer to conduct advanced research and development in the field of ironmaking technology, including DRI.  The candidate should possess in-depth knowledge of the key disciplines of transport theory, thermodynamics, physicochemical processes and solid mechanics, and be able to apply this knowledge to develop advanced mathematical models of the ironmaking processes.  The candidate must also possess good people skills and be able to function in a team in both a laboratory and plant environment. The job will be based in the East Chicago center of ArcelorMittal Global R&D supporting plants and projects world-wide. Travel both domestic and international up to 30% of the time is also a requirement.

 

Location: East Chicago

 

Job Duties:

  • Create, plan and execute R&D projects observing timelines, budgets and company safety rules;
  • Identify, develop & evaluate new technologies in the ironmaking field;
  • Provide high level technical assistance to ArcelorMittal Americas ironmaking facilities;
  • Develop advanced mathematical models and perform complex calculations in the areas of transport theory, thermodynamics, and solid mechanics to improve the operations of AM ironmaking and DRI facilities. Participate in global teams with other ArcelorMittal R&D laboratories to develop and implement projects for AM ironmaking facilities;
  • Generate new scientific knowledge in the field of DRI/ironmaking.

 

Education Requirements:  PhD in Mechanical, Metallurgical, or Chemical Engineering

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Solid background in core science disciplines of transport theory, thermodynamics, physicochemistry and solid mechanics.
  • Experience in programming in C++ and using commercial and open-source software packages for fluid dynamics and finite element analysis in multiphase reaction systems.
  • Mastery of English language skills.  

 

Preferred Requirements:

  • At least 5 Years of experience in metals manufacturing;
  • Specific research experience in the ironmaking field.
