The role:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to conduct advanced research and development in the field of metal joining manufacturing processes. In this position, the Welding Manufacturing Engineer will be responsible for developing metal welding solutions in collaboration with internal and external partners for a variety of steel grades in their hot rolled and cold rolled state. The ideal candidates will be required to use their metallurgical skills to drive development of new solutions using advanced R&D tools. Experience in metallurgy, materials science, powder metallurgy, welding engineering and current metal additive manufacturing technologies is valued. The keys to this position are superior communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to work cross-functionally with other areas of the organization, ability to work in both a laboratory and industrial environment, and the ability to participate and lead teams. The candidate must be able to work in a highly visible, dynamic, and fast-paced environment. The candidate should possess an in-depth understanding of steel product manufacturability processes in finishing area to cross-apply the concepts. The job will be based in the East Chicago Center of ArcelorMittal’s Global R&D with projects of global perspective where interaction with other ArcelorMittal R&D laboratories or plant personnel is expected. Travel both domestic and international up to 20% of the time is also a requirement.
Job Responsibilities
- Collaborate with global partners to develop new welding solutions for different advanced high strength steel grades.
- Perform root cause analysis of welding breaks and provide recipes to solve weldability of hot rolled and cold rolled sheets
- Take lead in developing R&D solutions in the area of metal joining and forming using R&D tools.
- Take responsibility of R&D equipment as lab deputy and provide guidance to operators for equipment operation, maintenance and safety.
- Apply R&D solutions to develop plant practices for welding existing and new steel grades.
- Collaborate with plant engineers to identify ways to improve productivity of welding processes and perform trials with application of best practices as standard procedures.
- Collaborate with R&D product design engineers to break away from conventional manufacturing rules to provide guidance and develop practices for steel grades under R&D developmental stage.
- Generate new scientific knowledge and support research and development of cold rolling process technologies.
- Create, plan and execute R&D projects observing timelines, budgets and company safety rules.
Education and Experience requirements:
- In-depth understanding of metal joining processes
- Thermodynamic software: Thermo-calc
- Metallographic Preparation: Polishing, mounting, etching
- Metallurgical Characterization: Light Optical Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD), X-Ray Diffraction (X-RAY), High Resolution Dilatometry
- Mechanical Testing: Crack propagation, creep, tensile, hardness, welding equipment
Preferred Requirements:
- Coil joining skills and familiarity with steel manufacturing process in finishing area
- Experience and familiarity with lab welding equipment
- Characterization of microstructure and mechanical properties of welded parts
- Familiarity with industrial welding supplier technologies
Minimum /Basic Education Requirements:
- MS Degree in Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering or Additive Manufacturing
Preferred Education Requirements:
- Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Additive Manufacturing
Other Requirements:
- High level of English language proficiency
- Manufacturing Software
- Experience with Laser Welding Equipment
- Experience with welding technologies and associated design and manufacturing standards
- Data processing and analytics.
