Camp Counsellor


ArcelorMittal Dofasco has created and developed the F.H. Sherman Recreation and Learning Centre to provide employees, retirees, and their families the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of recreational activities and leagues. This private recreation facility is home to gymnasiums, arenas, mini-putt course, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, tennis courts, beach volleyball courts and playground. Everything is situated on 65-acres of beautiful grounds, nestled close to the intersection of First Road East and Green Mountain, Stoney Creek.


The F.H. Sherman Recreation and Learning Centre is home to Camp Steel-Away which provides full day programming to children aged 4 – 12 years old from the beginning of July to the end of August. Each week consists of outdoor activities to get campers active and provide them with an opportunity to meet new friends and have an unforgettable summer experience.


Job Description:  


Reporting directly to the Camp Director and indirectly to the Event Specialist, Camp Steel-Away’s Camp Counsellors are responsible for implementing and engaging camp participants aged 4-12 in interactive outdoor activities including organized crafts, games, and sports activities while maintaining a safe environment.


Job Responsibilities:


  • Direct supervision of campers aged 4-12
  • Creates a supportive, inclusive, creative, and respectful environment for campers while ensuring all camp rules are followed
  • Maintains safety and supervision of all campers including upholding and abiding by ratio expectations
  • Organizes and implements specific age-related daily activities 
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and organized environment
  • Practices risk management skills to ensure the safety and well-being of all campers including sun safety
  • Open communication regarding any incidents, issues, and concerns with Camp Director
  • Maintain ongoing communication with parents, guardians, and community members
  • Assists with the mentorship of volunteers
  • Assists in maintaining accurate program records including incident/illness report forms where require
  • Must be available to work full time until August 26, 2022

Education & Experience:


  • Currently enrolled in post-secondary education related to children (Child & Youth Studies, ECE, Bachelor of Education) OR
  • Students going into Grade 12 or post-secondary studies in September with previous experience working with children
  • Camp and/or sport instruction experience preferred
  • Passion for working with children
  • Ability to work outdoors and in seasonal conditions such as very hot temperatures, dry environments, humid climates, damp and/or wet climates
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Standard First Aid & CPR-C
  • Complete Police Vulnerable Sector Check prior to employment start date
  • High Five Training (provided)


Hours of work: Monday-Friday 40-42.5 hours/week - Day Shift *May be required to work Canada Day
