Civil/Structural Engineer
Background
Market and Business Development functions are conducted by ArcelorMittal Global Research & Development and our staff interacts closely with ArcelorMittal Europe in providing support to our customers around the globe. We represent facilities throughout Flat Carbon Americas.
Within Market and Business Development, engineers work with our customers to identify, evaluate and develop profitable markets and applications. Technical support activities include architectural outreach, structural building design, analysis and testing support.
The role:
Your primary responsibility as a structural engineer will be to build close working relationships with the architectural community, including architects, structural design engineers and construction specifiers, to promote the use of steel in building construction, including project design opportunities, building component development and co-engineering, and technical presentations.
Accountabilities:
- Lead project activities for building design assistance with architects and structural design engineers, to implement ArcelorMittal steel solutions in building projects.
- Participate in analyzing building market trends and forecasting and defining construction product needs. Communicate this understanding within ArcelorMittal, and under the supervision of management recommend projects and priorities for Research Case Studies, New Product Development or Global R&D activities.
- Maintain awareness of regulatory building codes, standards and material specifications to ensure building design assistance is complying, including upcoming or future code change proposals.
- Participate in building product component improvements (co-engineering), by applying sound engineering principles independently, or by leading a team of subject matter experts.
- Participate in trade association and regulatory agency activities to ensure steel remains a viable material choice for building construction. Participate in the development of and recommend responses to opportunities in steel building market growth and threats to exclude steel from the building construction market.
- Develop technical white papers, presentations on sustainable use of steel in building construction, and participate in trade shows and industry presentations, to demonstrate and promote the use of steel in the building construction market.
Education, Accreditation, and Experience:
- Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Civil (Structural) Engineering.
- Minimum six years of relevant building design experience is required.
- Eligibility to travel to the USA is required.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Extensive knowledge of building structural design is required.
- Sound knowledge of the building construction market is required.
- Sound knowledge of Revit modelling software is required.
- Experience with building design in steel and concrete structures is required. Experience with building design in wood structures is also an asset.
- Sound knowledge of competitive (steel and non-steel) materials and products is required.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills and a high level of integrity are required.
- Show strong initiative and ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Good negotiating skills are required.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
- Strong organizational skills, and the ability to handle multiple demands are required.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment is required.
- Adaptability to change is required.
Working Environment:
- Office environment.
- Frequent visits to architectural or engineering design offices.
- Occasional travel to trade show and conferences.
- Occasional visits to customer manufacturing facilities.
- Occasional plant or laboratory visits.
- Frequent travel on personal time is required.
