Health & Safety Business Unit

 

Health & Safety Professional – Industrial Hygiene

 

(Permanent Position)

 

 

Overall Responsibility:

 

  • Provide leadership and direction to help implement and continuously improve Health & Safety (H&S) systems to support an Accident-Free Workplace.  Act as company and industry professional in Industrial Hygiene. 

 

Major Responsibilities

 

  • ASSESSMENTSConduct proactive and reactive workplace testing/analysis such as noise, airborne contaminants, radiation, and designated substances. Utilize standard scientific methodologies for sampling, evaluate results, and provide recommendations for corrective action.
  • H &S PROGRAM MANAGEMENT – Update and support development of the Program Standards for ArcelorMittal Dofasco. Includes maintaining occupational hygiene standards addressing hazardous chemicals, biological agents, physical agents, designated substance control programs and WHMIS requirements
  • REGULATORY COMPLIANCE – Maintain compliance with federal, provincial and municipal regulations.  Undertake interactions in communicating/corresponding with Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training & Skills Development and other government agencies on accidents investigations, occupational illnesses and inquiries. Audit hygiene programs for effectiveness and ensure continued alignment with ISO45001 certification.
  • HEALTH & SAFETY LEADERSHIP & INTERNAL STAKEHOLDERS SUPPORT – Provide professional guidance and collaborate with Internal Stakeholders to prioritze work and ensure collaborative implementation, delivery and support of Health & Safety requirements. Provide input to business plans, identify improvement opportunities and facilitate solution development. Influence and support the effective application of H&S strategies and resources. 
  • TRAINING AND AWARENESS – Provide input to training programs based on expertise in industrial hygiene.  Foster a culture of proactive hygiene awareness at all operational levels.

 

Knowledge & Skills:

 

  • Must have expertise in the H&S field, the Occupational Health & Safety Act/Regulations.
  • Must have expertise in use of sampling and hygiene monitoring equipment.
  • Must be able to set technical direction, develop company standards in cooperating with others and plan/facilitate the integration of new technology.
  • Must have expertise in risk assessment.
  • Must have strong problem solving and project management skills.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with management, employees, government and external industry groups.
  • Must have strong facilitation and negotiation skills.
  • Must demonstrate strong interdependent team building skills, able to work with others to achieve results.
  • Working knowledge of steel production process is an asset

 

Education & Experience:

 

  • Relevant University bachelor’s degree or community college diploma with expertise in the H&S discipline (Hygiene).  Master’s degree in Industrial Hygiene is an asset.
  • Ideally, minimum of 5 years of job-related Industrial Hygiene related experience.
  • Preference for professional designation in ROH, CIH, CRSP, or CSP.

 

 

Working Environment:

 

  • Office environment requiring up to 70% of time in plant, office/shop floor.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment.
  • This position is 100% onsite in Hamilton, Ontario. 

 

Hours of Work

 

  • Straight days, Monday to Friday with extended hours as required due to emergency or business needs.

The salary range for this position is $63,000 - $111,000. Starting salary will depend on the successful candidate’s qualifications and work experience.

    • Company paid Defined Contribution Pension Plan. No employee contribution required. With employer contributions between 5 and 10%.
