Health & Safety Business Unit
Health & Safety Specialist – Finishing Division
(Permanent Position)
Overall Responsibility:
- Provide leadership and direction to help implement and continuously improve H & S systems to support an Accident-Free Workplace. Act as company and industry professional in Safety.
Major Responsibilities
- HEALTH & SAFETY LEADERSHIP & INTERNAL STAKEHOLDERS SUPPORT – Provide professional guidance and collaborate with Internal Stakeholders to prioritze work and ensure collaborative implementation, delivery and support of Health & Safety requirements. Provide input to business plans, identify improvement opportunities and facilitate solution development. Influence and support the effective application of H&S strategies and resources.
- ASSESSMENTS – conduct risk assessments (HIRA’s) to identify risks/hazards and facilitate solution development.
- ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION – Facilitate/Participate in accident investigations using Root Cause Analysis or similar process to develop appropriate corrective actions and solutions.
- H&S PROGRAM MAINTENANCE – Provide leadership and support for continuous improvement of the Program Standards, Policy and Job Safe Practices for ArcelorMittal Dofasco. Participate as a Subject Mtter Expert in cross functional H&S Standards Improvement Committees.
- REGULATORY/GOVERNMENT - Interact/correspond with Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training & Skills Development on accidents investigations, employees complaints and other inquiries.
- EXPERTISE - Demonstrate and maintain company and industry expertise in the industrial safety field including legislation. Communicate relevant H&S information to Stakeholders and support making recommendations for addressing / managing issues.
- AUDITING - Conduct H&S management system and compliance audits in all business areas to maintain legal and program compliance, and external certifications.
- PROJECTS/IMPROVEMENT WORK - Apply H&S knowledge/experience in planning and performing tasks/projects.
- DATA ANALYSIS – Use statistical tools to interpret data sets, paying particular attention to trends and patterns that could be valuable for identifying areas of focus and improvement opportunities.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Must have expertise in the H&S field, the Occupational Health & Safety Act/Regulations.
- Must be able to set technical direction, develop company standards in cooperating with others and plan/facilitate the integration of new technology.
- Must have expertise in risk assessment.
- Must have strong problem solving and project management skills.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with management, employees, government and external industry groups.
- Must have strong facilitation and negotiation skills.
- Must demonstrate strong interdependent team building skills, able to work with others to achieve results.
- Working knowledge of steel production process is an asset
- Must have a valid class G driver’s license
Education & Experience:
- Relevant University bachelor’s degree or community college diploma with expertise in the H&S discipline.
- Ideally, minimum of 7 years of job-related Industrial and/or Construction Safety related experience.
- Professional designation in CRSP, NCSO, CIH, or ROH is considered an asset.
Working Environment:
- Office environment requiring up to 50% of time in plant/shop floor.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment.
- Provides rotating on-call coverage as part of the H&S department team providing round the clock support to business units (typically 1 week every 3 months).
Hours of Work
- Straight days, Monday to Friday with extended hours as required due to emergency or business needs.
