Machinist
Overall Responsibility:
To set-up and operate machine tools and to plan the sequence of operations in the machining on mill equipment to specifications.
Accountabilities:
- Set up and operates machine tools (ie. pipe threader, adjusting stops, feeds and speeds for efficient machining)
- Machine workpieces to precision tolerances and specified finishes
- Use precision measuring tools
- Provide trade assist to assemble, fit, align and/or adjust machinery and equipment to very close tolerances
- Uses portable equipment such as grinders, drills, climax mill, etc.
- Perform trade assist functions (ie. repairs machines, does minor welding on jobs for holding purposes, welds blemishes on jobs, does electrical repairs to hand tools, changes lightbulbs etc.)
- Interpret drawings and sketches to determine work procedure
- Receive instructions, prints and work orders
- Perform any layout work and makes sketches of parts as required
- Select tools for the job in accordance with the hardness, rigidity, surface finish required, machinability and other properties of parts to be machined
- Hand grinds high speed tools as required
Qualifications:
- Minimum 429A Ontario Certification of Qualification is required.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalency is required.
- 2-year Community College Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technician is an asset.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Very good trouble shooting, and problem-solving skills are required.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills are required.
- Intermediate personal computer and corporate standard software skills are required.
- Intermediate Computer Maintenance Management System skills are required.
- Good skills in planning and scheduling of maintenance work are required.
- Working knowledge of material handling procedures and overhead lifting methods
Working Conditions:
- Heavy industrial requiring 100% of time in Machine Shop/Plant.
- Exposure to noise; heights; confined spaces, poor lighting conditions, material, products, and by-products associated with the manufacture of steel, temperature and weather extremes that may require the use of specialized protective devices or equipment. Required to climb stairs, ladders and scaffolding to access elevations, able to crouch for periods of time, push, pull, lift, and turn while carrying tools, material and equipment in various parts of the facilities.
Hours of Work:
- 8-hour days/afternoons Monday - Friday with occasional night shift.
- May be required to be available for call-ins and carry a pager/cell phone.
