Global Research and Development

Material and Metallurgical Analyst

(Permanent Position)



The ArcelorMittal Dofasco research lab has a staff of ~50 people and a wide range of analytical and process simulation equipment.  The Dofasco lab is part of a larger Global R&D organization with ~1300 researchers in 14 labs across Europe and the Americas.  The R&D lab provides technical leadership in process improvement and new product development that supports both the Hamilton plant and broader global applications.




The candidate will join a team of professionals that perform analytical work to support R&D projects, ArcelorMittal production quality, and product quality support for our customers.  They will be involved but not limited to the following:


  • Provide material selection and heat treatment recommendations for components in industrial applications
  • Read and interpret material certifications
  • Perform failure analysis on equipment failures in the plant
  • Provide direct support to Engineering design activities including material and process selection
  • Provide technical support and problem solving during maintenance, repairs and shutdowns in various areas of the plant
  • Conduct defect analysis and characterization of steel that has failed during manufacturing or in service
  • Provide technical support to R&D projects by performing various metallographic analysis
  • Maintain up to date knowledge in equipment and testing procedures
  • Report writing to communicate the outcome of defect and failure analysis investigations.
  • Support Global Research and Development projects as required


Education and Experience:


  • Bachelor degree in Materials or Metallurgical Engineering is required.
  • Masters degree in Materials or Metallurgical Engineering is asset.
  • Minumum 5 years of relevant work experience is required.
  • Other degrees or qualifications that aid flexibility in an R&D lab will be considered


Knowledge & Skills:


  • Knowledge of both ferrous and non-ferrous material grades and experience in failure analysis is an asset.
  • Knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous materials: low carbon steels, HSLA, AHSS, metallic coatings, tool steels, castings, stainless steels, nickel alloys, hardfacing materials, copper and its alloys.
  • Knowledge of Physical Metallurgy, the structure of materials and their related properties.
  • Knowledge of fractography, failure modes, microstructures, chemical and mechanical properties.
  • Ability to interpret both North American and global material grades and specifications.
  • Working knowledge of welding, heat treatments, forgings and castings.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints.
  • Experience with failure analysis and some steel metallurgical defects.
  • Familiarity with standard automotive and construction products and coatings.
  • Capable of routine metallographic preparation techniques such as cross-sectioning, mounting and polishing.
  • Familiarity with various ASTM testing methods for measuring metallographic features.
  • Ability to perform various routine metallographic tests and analysis.  Examples include:
      • Analysis of grain structure and steel phases
      • Grain size, inclusion ratings, coating thickness
      • Microhardness testing
      • Optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examinations
      • Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) analysis
      • Various etching techniques
  • Carry-out investigations on steel samples that failed in application or have manufacturing defects
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.


Work Environment


  • Candidates are expected to work in both an office and laboratory environment, with some work in a heavy manufacturing environment.
  • The manufacturing plant environment includes exposure to dust, chemicals, temperature changes, noise and large industrial equipment.
  • This role may be eligible to work remote on an ad hoc or part time basis.


Hours of Work:


  • Arcelormittal Dofasco is a 24/7 facility
  • Normal hours of work for this position is “days”, Monday to Friday, with extended hours as required to meet project deadlines or resulting from periods of peak workload
