Full Time Material Handling & Logistics AZ Team Member (Contract – 12 Months*)

 

*Contracts may be renewed to a maximum duration of 24 months based on business conditions and performance.

 

Position Description:

  • Perform driving, operating and dispatching tasks in a fully rotational team environment to support the flow of material within Primary and Finishing Manufacturing

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Comply with the appropriate government guidelines for the Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of Labour and CRTC regulations
  • Ensure all equipment is in safe working order to maximize optimum reliability and ensure the safe operation of the equipment while driving on all Dofasco and city streets

 

Duties can include but not limited to:

 

Transporter Operator

  • Operate two types of Transporter trucks (HBI and Hood – Computer based dispatching)
  • The Paling Transporter is a multi-wheeled rubber tired carrier, capable of transporting more than 200 tons. The payload would be a combination of the deck weight and the product weight.

 

Coil Truck Driver

  • The Coil Truck tractor is a conventional truck trailer configuration capable of operating on city streets

 

Slab Carrier Operator

  • The Material Handling and Logistics Transporter Division has a fleet of four Kress ST-300T 6 wheeled, 150 Ton Straddle Carriers, which haul slab steel within the plant road system
  • Transports slab steel to various plant locations based on the computer based priority sequence designated in the Automated Slab Management System located in the onboard computer

 

Dispatcher

  • Dispatcher will use information to update the computer optimizing program to set up priority deck movements for material flow and communicate other process or product issues to their drivers through the message program or the two-way radio system
  • Dispatcher oversees all transporter and Dempster assignments throughout the shift responding to flow and equipment issues recording and reporting all concerns

 

Tractor

  • There are up to 7 different tractor functions using 40 ton tractors with rams or forks

 

Crane

  • There are 4 gantry cranes on rails servicing the Hot Band Inventory storage yards, as well as Straddle Port cranes on wheels loading/unloading/sorting slabs
     

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required
  • AZ license with clear driver’s abstract is required
  • Heavy Equipment experience is an asset
  • Fork lift/tractor experience is an asset
  • Experience as a dispatcher and computer skills are an asset
     

Working Conditions:

  • Plant environment and city streets.
  • Office environment
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including hard hat, safety boots, safety glasses, hearing protection, long sleeve shirt, long pants, and sunglasses when required.
  • Exposure to noise, dust, heat and cold at various times throughout the year.
  • Stair and ladder climbing is required
  • Must be able to push and pull tarp for coil truck open and closed as required.  Coil trucks have standard transmissions, which require using both legs to operate the clutch, brakes and gas pedals.
     

Hours of Work:

  • Continuous 12-hour shifts in a 7 day, 24-hour timeframe
  • Overtime as required

 

Our Recruitment Process:

  • Our team may evaluate applicants via online assessments and a preliminary phone interview. These assessments will provide greater insight into candidate skill level and their ability to perform within an Advanced Manufacturing teaming environment. 

  

  • Candidates who interview successfully will receive a conditional offer employment. The conditions include the successful completion of; proof of secondary school education or equivalent, criminal background check, employment reference check and pre-placement medical assessment.

  • Team members who are employed on contract may be considered for permanent team member opportunities based on individual performance and favourable market conditions.
