I.T. Network Specialist


ArcelorMittal Dofasco operates a world class computer integrated manufacturing facility in Hamilton, utilizing state of the art information technologies.

The IT Networks group supports provisioning and management of the corporate local and wide area computer networks for the North America IT Shared Service.  IT Networks also participates in and leads standardization projects in the Americas. The successful applicant will have senior computer networking skills which include IP level provisioning, access layer controls, packet level troubleshooting as well as an in-depth knowledge of wired and wireless design and management.


Major Responsibilities:


An integral member of the Network Services team within the Information Systems department.

Planning, design, implementation, support, and management of network equipment - including routers & switches in LAN and WAN environments, wireless controllers and access points, as well as a broad tool portfolio.

  • Plan, design, implement, and support network operation, including LAN, WAN and Wireless technologies
  • Analyze network capacity to recommend and\or implement solutions
  • Provide level 2 and 3 support for network issues relating to performance and break\fix
  • Provide guidance to the business for new initiatives which require network support
  • Documentation of network solutions and support methods
  • Plan, design, implement and support a broad tool portfolio
  • Interact with and manage vendors providing network services including, new services, day to day services, and contracts and support renewals
  • Share a pager rotation to support network operation
  • Regularly visit industrial manufacturing sites to perform duties and responsibilities
  • Strict adherence to Dofasco safety procedures, and a constant awareness of safety, in all aspects of a job or task


Education and Experience:


  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Computer Science, Software Engineering
  • 3-5 years of experience encompassing design and operation of traditional wired and wireless networks (esp. Cisco) as well as second and third level support for complex network environments
  • Knowledge of copper and fiber network cable plant 
  • Foundational understanding of PLC’s and automation control systems, including Siemens & Rockwell\Allen Bradley switches & AP’s, and operation pertaining to network operation
  • Knowledge of ProfiNet, EthernetIP, and other operational technology (OT) network protocols would be considered an asset, but not required
  • Deep understanding of proprietary and non-proprietary networking protocols (e.g., OSPF, VRRP, BGP, VSS, vPC, VLAN, QoS, etc)
  • Solid understanding of the OSI or TCP/IP model
  • Packet level troubleshooting ability would be considered an asset
  • IP Telephony experience considered an asset
  • Hands-on experience with monitoring, network diagnostic and network analytics tools
  • Competency with security concepts and VPN technologies and associated protocols
  • Working experience common IT technologies such as Microsoft technologies, server administration, VMWare, and Citrix
  • Working knowledge of common IT hardware and services (end devices, printers, infrastructure services such as DNS, DHCP, etc)

  • Demonstrates strong teamwork, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Experience in Incident, Change and Configuration Management procedures
  • A track record for meeting deadlines
  • Awareness of emerging IT trends and directions


Work Environment: 

Office and plant environment.   The network at ArcelorMittal Dofasco spans the entire 325-hectare Hamilton campus, and includes over 500 sites in many buildings and facilities.  Although the office is the primary location of work, the successful candidate must be comfortable working throughout a heavy industrial environment.


Hours of Work:

  • Standard Monday to Friday office hours
  • Occasional extended, paid hours as required to meet project deadlines or peak workloads
  • 24x7 on-call rotation as required with the rest of the team
