Occupational Health Nurse (Contract Position)

 

Overall Responsibility:

 

  1. Promote and maintain the physical and psychosocial well-being of the employees of ArcelorMittal Dofasco i.e. Health care, Emergency Response services, and Wellness promotion with the goal of achieving the employee’s optimum function and the reduction of workplace accidents in our Journey to Zero initiatives.
  2. Develop, facilitate and implement rehabilitation plans for employees in the rehabilitation process working with internal and external resources to maximum their level of occupational potential and to decrease extended absences in the workplace.
  3. Initiate emergent interventions for employees with psycho-social events and promote internal and/or external resources to ensure optimal wellbeing.
  4. Provide direction to employees and leaders on the most current Public Health guidelines for the management of COVID 19 Pandemic in the workplace.

 

Accountabilities:

 

  1. Provide occupational nursing expertise to employees in the event of occupational injury, critical illness and/or occupational disease and in their prevention, as well as Lifestyle and Wellness health teaching and interventions.
  2. Perform and/or coordinate the required medical surveillance on employees who have had past and/or present exposure to designated substances as defined by the Occupational Health and Safety Act as well as in house surveillance programs.
  3. Provide disability management, undertaking roles in attendance management for early safe return to work. Developing effective initial return to work assessments for injured/ill employees, interacting effectively with family doctor/specialist, Great West Life, WSIB as well as internal Disability Management/Claims department to rehabilitiate employees back to workplace.  Maintain all aspects for graduated return to work programs if applicable.
  4. Liase with employees in crisis with HR Employee Relations, area supervision, and business unit managers in work issues and fitness to work situations.  Facilitate referral to appropriate outside agencies as required, i.e.community resources, Homewood Health EFAP, consulting physicians.  Review of complex cases with Mental Health Issues, development and implementation of effective treatment plans liasing with Psychiatric Specialists, EFAP, Homewood Treatment Facility, Critical Incident Stress Debriefing/Defusing. Monitor employees on a followup basis to support effective return to work programs after inpatient treatment programs. 
  5. Member of  the Emergency Response Team in the field providing advanced care to injured  or critically ill employees as well as providing work direction to Fire and Security Personnel.
  6. Provide nursing expertise to all Lifestyle initiatives including random blood screening, interpretation of results, health teaching and referral to appropriate Medical specialists as required, followup with employees as required i.e Personal Best Program, Bi-annual Health and Safety Fair, Departmental Health and Safety Days, Livewell program.  Conduct literature searchs to ensure best practices are maintained, development and presentation at Health and Safety days as requested.
  7. Participate in  yearly annual Flu Campaign, provide solutions to improve program utilization as needed.
  8. Provide followup to employees displaying symptoms of COVID 19, perform COVID 19 swab as per Medical Directive, engage to contact tracing for any positive COVID 19 cases and liase with Public Health as required, assess and clear employees for return to work post quarantine periods.

 

Qualifications:

 

  1. Minimum Registered Nurse Degree (BScN). Experience in Occupational Health, Emergency and/or Mental Health Nursing preferred.
  2. Specialty in Occupational Health Nursing, (COHN (c)) is an asset.
  3. Valid Class G Driver’s License is required.

 

Knowledge & Skills:

 

  1. Working skill set in assessment/triage/emergency care/efap/rehab.
  2. Working knowledge of Medical Department strategy and processes is required.
  3. Working knowledge of Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) legislation and company insurance carrier policies is required.
  4. General knowledge of Company business is an asset.
  5. Current BCLS certification.
  6. Excellent interpersonal/communication/presentation/negotiation/facilitation skills are a must.
  7. Intermediate personal computer and standard corporate software applications and appropriate systems skills are required.
  8. Working knowledge of Public Health guidelines during COVID 19 Pandemic is an asset

 

Working Conditions:

 

Office environment, requiring occasional plant visits and physical response to emergency scenes within the plant environment. Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as required.

 

Hours of Work:

 

8.5-hour days (Monday- Friday) with possible extended hours as required due to periods of peak workloads/emergent situations. 40 hour paid work week.
