Researcher – Data Science

 

 

The ArcelorMittal Dofasco research lab has a staff of ~50 people and a wide range of analytical and process simulation equipment.  The Dofasco lab is part of a larger Global R&D organization with ~1300 researchers in 14 labs across Europe and the Americas.  The R&D lab provides technical leadership in process improvement and new product development that supports both the Hamilton plant and broader global applications.

 

Primary Function

Candidate for this position will possess strong background in Data Science and Machine and Deep Learning and will be involved in applying these techniques to a variety of R&D projects focused on Process Improvement. You will use advanced data analysis tools effectively for your own projects and share this knowledge with others around you.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Run R&D projects, developing or assisting in the development of advanced predictive models, or process and product solutions through advanced data analysis or machine learning.
  • Assist in the acquisition, compilation, validation and analysis of trial data (sometimes complex) from multiple sources throughout the plant or the lab.
  • Educate other Researchers in the available tools for data analytics, advanced modelling and digitalization and promote their use in future efforts.
  • Keep abreast of up-to-date knowledge on the tools and methods for data analysis, machine learning and digitalization.
  • Explore new technologies in the Digitalization front, for profitable application in the plant or R&D.
  • Communicate project results in reports, presentations, and publications.
  • Interact with ArcelorMittal Dofasco plant personnel and project leaders as well as collaborate with members of ArcelorMittal Global R&D

 

Qualifications

  • A university degree (Master’s degrees or above preferred) in Sciences or Engineering. Some experience working with industrial or manufacturing data would be an asset. Experience in Metallurgy or Steel Manufacturing would be extremely beneficial.
  • Solid knowledge in the following areas:

 

  1. Machine and deep learning
  2. Developing and implementing AI algorithms
  3. Advanced data analysis
  4. Statistics (design of experiments, data analysis and model formulation)
  5. Computer Programming (C++, Java, etc.)

 

  • Ability to learn, and to teach others
  • Advanced ability to use and learn Office 365 software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PowerApps, PowerBI). Skills in Python and SQL will be strong assets.
  • Ability to work as a team member on cross-functional projects, lead from a technical analysis standpoint, and take direction from others more knowledgeable in the process and business aspects.
  • Ability to work under minimum supervision.
  • Must have interpersonal skills with strong oral, presentation and written communication skills.
