Researcher – Sustainable Mining

About us:

 

The Global R&D Centre in Hamilton is home to a team of about 65 researchers and engineers, supported by extensive analytical and process‑simulation equipment that spans the full steelmaking value chain—from mining through to finished products. The Hamilton lab is part of ArcelorMittal’s broader R&D network of roughly 1,650 researchers across Europe and the Americas.

 

The team is now developing new programs focused on sustainable mining and circularity, with a particular emphasis on supporting ArcelorMittal Mining Canada (AMMC) as well as contributing to other ArcelorMittal mining projects around the world. AMMC produces iron ore concentrate and iron oxide pellets for the global steel market. It operates two open-pit mines near Fermont: Mont-Wright, the largest open-pit iron ore mine in Canada, and Fire Lake and has a pellet plant in Port-Cartier that is among the most efficient in the world. This role offers the opportunity to contribute at the ground floor of these initiatives, working closely with our Canadian production sites and collaborating with colleagues across the global R&D organization

 

 

Your Role:

 

Your main role will be to support developing research projects related to sustainable mining and by-product circularity. The goals of these circularity projects are to increase our understanding of the technical pathways to utilize or mitigate the environmental impact of mine tailings, waste rock, and other mining and steelmaking by-products. You will work alongside a team of researchers, engineers, technologists, trades, and manufacturing personnel on these projects.

 

Main Requirements

 

  • University degree in Material Science, Mining, Chemical, or other relevant Engineering.  Advanced degree would be preferred i.e. Masters or PhD.

  • Knowledge, and preferably experience in mineral extraction and refining, and/or steelmaking primary processes.

  • Ability to perform technoeconomic assessments and feasibility studies on circularity technology

  • Support and coordinate bulk material sampling and analysis techniques, and interpretation of laboratory data.

  • Knowledge of analytical techniques such as microscopy, ICP, XRF, and XRD methodology and techniques for material characterization.

  • Ability to use techniques and tools to compile data, perform statistical analysis and report findings on mining and steelmaking process data. Experience in Excel, Python, and/or SQL is an asset.

  • Must be a self-starter capable of initiating projects and seeing them through to completion., with ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Must possess good interpersonal skills and show ability to work as a team member on cross-functional projects.

  • Effective deployment of R&D requires strong oral, presentation and written communication skills and should be able to communicate across a range of groups (operators to academics).

  • Must be eligible to work in Canada.

  • Although English is the standard language in ArcelorMittal, a second language is a benefit, particularly French.

  • Wear mandatory industrial personal protective equipment (PPE), such as hard hat, fire-protected clothing, lab-coat, safety glasses, gloves etc. for performing R&D work.

  • Support Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) initiatives at R&D.

 

Nice to have:

 

  • Comfortable in a heavy industrial/mine setting

  • Knowledge of mass and energy balance, heat transfer, general engineering principles, etc. as applied to mining process flow

  • Able to work independently or collaboratively in a team environment

  • Knowledge in predictive modelling/machine learning techniques to optimize process inputs and outputs

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Verbal, presentation, and written communication skills for effect deployment of R&D across a range of groups

  • Ability to multi-task with strong time management skills

 

Work Conditions:  

 

  • Full-time position, based in Hamilton, ON

  • Typical working hours are 8 hours per day, Monday to Friday

  • Office, Plant, Mine, and Lab Environment

  • Travel will be expected for this role (e.g. mine site visits)

  • This position is 100% onsite

The salary range for this position is $91,000 - $114,000. Starting salary will depend on the successful candidate’s qualifications and work experience.
