Researcher / Senior Researcher - Energy & Decarbonization

(Permanent Position)

 

 

The ArcelorMittal Dofasco research lab has a staff of ~90 people and a wide range of analytical and process simulation equipment.  The Dofasco lab is part of a larger Global R&D organization with ~1300 researchers in 14 labs across Europe and the Americas.  The R&D lab provides technical leadership in process improvement and new product development that supports both the Hamilton plant and broader global applications.

 

The Primary Process Research group plays a pivotal role in developing and deploying technologies to reduce GHG emissions and support ArcelorMittal’s goal of achieving net-zero steelmaking by 2050. The Energy Researcher role within ArcelorMittal’s Global R&D department will identify and develop new technologies and solutions, to improve primary process efficiency and support developing roadmaps for steelmaking decarbonization. This position will support activities across the primary steelmaking process within ArcelorMittal plants. 

 

Who are we looking for?

 

The successful candidate will possess a strong background in thermodynamics, heat & mass balances, and high temperature industrial processes.  These skills will be applied to solve technical problems in a variety of process implementation or improvement R&D projects. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership to build and execute R&D projects, lead improvement studies, collaborate with Global R&D and assist business units in Primary Iron and Steelmaking at ArcelorMittal Dofasco.

 

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Develop and execute R&D projects and studies in an industrial environment for assigned projects. This may include conducting lab experiments and/or industrial trials, and assessing and reporting on the results.
  • Interact with plant technology and operations personnel, as well as members of ArcelorMittal Global R&D, both in Hamilton and at other labs, to solve challenges or share knowledge.
  • Investigate energy optimization and process improvements simulations using models that are created by others and the candidate.
  • Perform techno-economic analyses of various scenarios of process implementations and provide recommendations on findings.
  • Collect, clean, and analyze plant data to provide technical assistance and support business decisions on energy, environmental factors or other areas within primary processes as needed.
  • Develop up-to-date awareness of technical developments in the ironmaking, energy and CO2 field through attendance at conferences, seminars and other training opportunities

 

Desired Qualifications:

 

  • University degree in Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering.  Advanced degree would be preferred i.e. Masters, PhD or Post-Doctorate.
  • Knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat and mass transfer. Knowledge of chemistry is a plus.
  • Knowledge of techniques and tools for process analysis, mathematical modeling, numerical methods, optimization and simulation in Python or another language.
  • Knowledge, and preferably experience, of the primary processes within a steel plant.
  • Must be a self-starter capable of initiating projects and seeing them through to completion, with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to succeed while working on multiple, simultaneous projects.
  • Must possess good interpersonal skills and show ability to work as a team member on cross-functional projects.
  • Effective deployment of R&D requires strong oral, presentation and written communication skills.  Should be able to communicate across a range of groups (operators to academics).
  • Willing to travel and represent ArcelorMittal Dofasco in discussions with other plants, labs, suppliers, etc. (~once per quarter).
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada.
  • Although English is the standard language in ArcelorMittal, a second language is a benefit, e.g. French, Portuguese, Spanish, etc.

 

Work Environment:

 

  • Hours of work will generally be days, Monday to Friday with extended hours as required due to periods of peak workloads.
  • Primarily office environment with lab/plant exposure as required.
  • This position may include travel to other ArcelorMittal plants and R&D facilities to deploy technology and run trials (~once per quarter).
  • This position is eligible for remote work in accordance with our remote work policy.

 

 

Hours of Work:

 

Normal hours of work are days, Monday to Friday, with extended hours as required to meet project deadlines or resulting from periods of peak workload.
