The Environment Department supports manufacturing operations in Hamilton on matters of environmental compliance, reporting, ISO 14001 / Environmental Management System (EMS), stakeholder engagement and capital projects. The successful applicant will have relevant environment experience dealing with air and noise emissions, air emissions inventories, NPRI reporting, water, waste and secondary materials, and chemical management in a complex manufacturing setting. 

 

Major Responsibilities:

 

As an integral member of the Environment Team within the Manufacturing Organization, you will be instrumental in providing day to day support for Manufacturing Business Unit(s) regarding environmental regulatory issues, incident response and follow up, engagement with regulators (Env. Canada, MECP, City of Hamilton etc.), additional details are described below:

 

  • Industry expertise in one or more major environment fields (ie. air, water, waste, chemical management or EMS).  For this position experience in managing air emissions is preferred.  Act as company expert in tracking and communicating environmental performance information both internally & externally.
  • Analyze, interpret and manage environmental legislation/issues/data within areas of expertise (air preferred) and assigned environmental support business units.  Provide leadership/direction in setting corporate environmental priorities and action relating to these analyses/interpretations.
  • Provide advanced guidance to business area(s) on a broad range of environmental issues relating to air, water, chemical and secondary materials management.  This includes key input to business plans, environment performance reporting, EMS improvements, training, special studies & liaison with all levels of government.
  • Represent ArcelorMittal Dofasco on relevant stakeholder groups from the community, government  and/or industrial sectors (e.g Hamilton Industral Environmental Association, Canadian Steel Producers Association).
  • EMS - Support the execution and continual improvement environmental management systems and conformance performance.  This includes recommending and developing programs to meet ArcelorMittal Dofasco's environmental commitments.
  • Conduct environmental management system and compliance audits in business areas.
  • Provide advanced coaching and mentoring to other environmental positions within the department and temporary placements (e.g. interns, Co-op students, and Business unit environmental coordinators).
  • Act as ArcelorMittal Dofasco expert and take the lead role in handling/communicating environmental incidents and interacting/corresponding with government on inspections and other inquiries.
  • As part of the On-call team provide 24 hour on-call response to manage ArcelorMittal Dofasco environmental incidents.
  • Apply advanced environmental and technical knowledge/experience in support of capital projects.  This includes, for example, corporate cross-functional projects, plant closures, acquisitions, sector-wide studies, multi-stakeholder initiatives, task forces, papers and environmental reports/surveys for key external stakeholders.
  • Influence and contribute to the development of environmental policy/tools within government, particularly provincial and federal levels, as well as at the corporate level.
  • Regularly visit industrial manufacturing sites to perform duties and responsibilities, building a network of contacts and industrial manufacturing expertise.
  • Strict adherence to Dofasco safety procedures, and a constant awareness of safety, in all aspects of a job or task.

 

Education and Experience:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related education.
  • 5 - 10 years of relevant  experience in environmental management and /or integrated steel manufacturing.
  • Significant experience with air emissions management, air emissions inventories and dispersion modelling
  • Experience with NPRI (National Pollution Release Inventory) reporting
  • Experience with ISO 14001 / Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
  • Significant experience with environmental permitting and regulatory engagement with stakeholders
  • Significant experience with Federal, Provincial and Municipal regulations pertaining to air emissions, water discharges, chemical management and/or waste disposal.
  • Steel or heavy industry experience is an asset.

  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and decision-making skills

  • Ability to manage large assignments involving multiple groups, technologies, and stakeholders with minimal supervision
  • Excellent computer skills including MS Excel and PowerPoint. Experience with PowerBI, Power Query, and/or SSRS is an asset.
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex environmental regulations to a heavy industrial manufacturing context
  • Strong support of change and continuous improvement / efficiency initiatives.
  • Excellent organization skills and ability to prioritize based on impact and business need
  • Up to date knowledge of emerging trends in Environmental Management

 

Work Environment: 

 

Office (80%) and plant environment (20%).   The manufacturing site in Hamilton comprises of over 750 acres of production facilities including Coke production, Iron and Steelmaking, Hot Rolling and steel strip finishing.  facilities.  Although the office is the primary location of work, the successful candidate must be comfortable working throughout a heavy industrial environment.

 

Hours of Work:

  • Standard Monday to Friday office hours
  • Available for remote work (part time) 2 – 3 days / week.
  • 24x7 on-call rotation as required with the rest of the team
