Switchgear Technician / Electrician


The Role: 


Become part of a team that maintains, tests, and services breakers, sub-stations, and medium voltage switch gear across the entire plant. The role requires individuals who are self-starting and focus on detail, to ensure reliability for all our assets.


  • Repair and rebuild low voltage and high voltage equipment in the shop or mill.
  • Assist trades in maintaining equipment performance at a level that ensures process reliability.
  • Retrofit low voltage breakers using the Carriere kit instruction manual.
  • Ensure all low voltage and high voltage equipment meets repair standards and tolerances.
  • Testing breakers prior to and after overhauls to ensure quality and performance metrics are achieved using primary and secondary injection.
  • Test and calibrate protection devices such as protection relays, trip devices, etc.
  • Service, repair, rebuild and install transformer Diverters and Vacuum Switches.
  • Service, repair, rebuild and test various models and styles of medium and low voltage switchgear including air-magnetic, vacuum and SF6.
  • Act as Subject Matter Expert during rebuilds/repairs and mentor/train others during work execution on the job.


About You:


  • Minimum 3 years of experience in the switchgear service industry is required.
  • 442 Industrial Electrician or 309A Construction & Maintenance Electrician Certificate of Qualification or Interprovincial Red Seal is considered an asset.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to follow directions and work in a team environment with minimal supervision.
  • Good trouble shooting, and problem-solving skills are required.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills are required.
  • Basic personal computer skills (MS Word, Excel) are required.
  • Knowledge/experience in Computerized Maintenance Management System is considered an asset.


Work Environment:


  • Heavy industrial environment, time will be spent in manufacturing facilities and shop.
  • Exposure to noise, heights, confined spaces, poor lighting conditions, material, products and by-products associated with the manufacture of steel, temperatures and weather extremes that require the use of specialized protective devices or equipment.
  • Required to climb stairs, ladders and scaffolding to access elevations, able to crouch for periods of time, operate jackhammers, push, pull, lift and turn while carrying tools, material and equipment in various parts of the facility
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment


Hours of Work:


  • 8-hour day schedule (06:30-15:00) with extended hours as required due to period of peak workloads.
  • Extended hours for shutdowns, emergency breakdown work and call-in support.
