Steelmaking Operations
Full Time 12-Hour Rotating Shift Manufacturing Team Member
(Casual - 12 Month Contract)
Contracts may be extended up to a maximum of 2 years based on business conditions and performance. Throughout your contract you will be considered for permanent opportunities that become available. Attendance, performance, attitude, reliability, and business conditions are all taken into consideration.
About Steelmaking Operations:
ArcelorMittal Dofasco is seeking top-caliber candidates with industrial manufacturing and/or construction work experience to join our Steelmaking Operations Department as a Team Member.
As a Steelmaking Team Member, you will perform a variety of functions in a team environment directly related to the manufacturing of steel slabs. Duties will vary based on assigned placement within the Business Unit, and may include supporting: Basic Oxygen Steelmaking Operations, Electric Arc Furnace Steelmaking Operations, Continuous Casting Operations, as well as Steelmaking Services groups.
Successful candidates will learn various roles in the area they have been hired and participate in job rotations to further develop their knowledge, skills and competence. There is the opportunity to grow in both job level and rate of pay with the development of new skills and competencies.
For Basic Oxygen Operations, successful candidates will perform functions directly related to the melting of scrap and iron in a basic oxygen furnace and refinement of liquid steel at the ladle metallurgy station to meet the desired production and quality for the internal and external customers.
For Electric Arc Furnace Operations, successful candidates will perform functions directly related to the melting of scrap and iron in an electric arc furnace and refinement of liquid steel at the ladle metallurgy station to meet the desired production and quality for the internal and external customers.
For Continuous Casting Operations, successful candidates will perform functions directly related to converting the liquid steel into slab form. These slabs are all required to meet customer specifications in terms of chemistry, quality, dimensions, and weight. Customers would include the downstream processes and external companies.
For Services, successful candidates will perform any number of tasks to support the Steelmaking processes. This would include ensuring all key supplies, such as: scrap, iron, fluxes, alloys, and operating consumables are always available. Mobile equipment (overhead cranes, forklifts, skid-steers) is typically used to support these tasks.
Job Expectations:
- 12-hour shifts, rotating days/nights with overtime as required.
- Work environment can be hot, humid, cold, dusty, and dirty. Some positions may require working at heights.
- Learn and safely perform new tasks, basic skills such as rigging, operating mobile equipment, utilizing hand and power tools.
- Daily problem-solving, teamwork and autonomous work.
- Assist in the setup, adjustment, and troubleshooting of production processes, machinery, and equipment.
- Walking, lifting (up to 50 lbs.), and repeated physical movement (twisting, pulling, pushing, and crouching).
- Some amount of climbing stairs, ladders, and scaffolding.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate (GED).
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Manufacturing experience is desirable.
- This includes but is not limited to experience in the following: Overhead/Remote Crane Operator, Heavy Equipment Operator, Experience within the Canadian Forces, Steel Industry experience, Construction, Bricklaying, Welding, Shipping and Receiving.
- Strong problem-solving skills, ability to learn, think critically, and take on new responsibilities.
- Great communication skills and ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
- Strong work ethic and ability to work in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment.
- Consistent attendance and punctuality.
- Basic computer skills, software literacy and ability to learn new technology.

This position offers a starting hourly rate of $27.99. Employees have the opportunity for wage increases through demonstrated skills and competencies established by the business.
