DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?
The ideal candidate will provide strong environmental quality compliance and sustainability knowledge and skills to maintain the site’s environmental and regulatory compliance while complimenting the environmental team’s environmental stewardship activities with a focus on air, water, waste and other regulatory compliance.
The Basics:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering (Chemical, Environmental, Civil, Mechanical, Environmental Management), Chemistry, Biology, other related field, or combination of post-secondary education and related experience
- A minimum of 2 years of experience interpreting environmental standards, rules, and regulations; how they are related to the organizations processes, facilities, and equipment
- Broad understanding of commonly employed engineering principles, environmental and safety requirements, and familiarity in working with local, state and federal agencies
- Must have experience interpreting standards, rules, and regulations including EPA, ADEM, USACE, DOT, etc.
- Experience in working in a fast-paced, manufacturing/industry environment
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs
The Extras:
- 5+ years of experience strongly preferred
- Proficient with SAP preferred
- Steel industry technical knowledge
- Experience with ISO-14001 Environmental Management System
- Experience during the project phases supporting permit application processing
TRAITS TO BE SUCCESSFUL
- Ability to communicate difficult environmental compliance topics effectively and manage accountability while maintaining positive relationships with all team members
- Ability to identify and evaluate federal, state, and local environmental compliance issues
- Ability to learn software packages quickly as needed
- Demonstrates strong decision-making, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to handle a fast-paced environment, with strong organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritizing skills
- Demonstrates a high degree of professionalism, work ethic, and strong interpersonal communication skills (written and verbal)
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
- Support the Environmental Team in water and waste regulatory compliance and management of ancillary programs such as recycling, wildlife habitat conservation, and environmental sustainability.
- Coordinate water and waste permitting elements with operations, project management, consultants, and regulatory agencies.
- Review water and waste programs on a routine basis, identify areas and opportunities for improvement, and communicate environmental performance.
- Effectively communicate and implement regulatory requirements and permit conditions.
- Coordinate/conduct sampling for water, wastewater and waste programs.
- Prepare, reviews and submit required external and internal reports.
- Perform monitoring and inspections of water and waste related compliance with the contractor’s environmental management plan.
- Develop and obtain variances or alternative operating conditions to protect site from enforcement actions.
- Investigate environmental incidents using causal learning and works to implement corrective actions.
- Lead or participate in continuous improvement activities.
- Report deviations or exceedances to applicable regulatory agencies as required by permits or other applicable requirements.
