OPPORTUNITY

ArcelorMittal North America is looking for a Health & Safety Director to support the organization in health and safety strategy, policy, and guidelines across North America locations. To be successful in this role you should have excellent leadership communications skills, deep understanding of legal health and safety guidelines, and experience of maintaining or reaching external audited health and safety management standards. The position reports to the Chief Operation Officer, North America.

JOB SUMMARY

Support the organization in health and safety policy, strategy, and guidelines. Develop and implement local health and safety strategies and measurement systems to ensure a safe, compliant, and productive work environment across all ArcelorMittal North America operations. This role involves steering the organization towards health and safety excellence, fostering a proactive and evolved health and safety culture focused on leadership accountability, employee consciousness, engagement, and involvement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure North America business units are legally compliant with health and safety legislation.

  • Develop the North America health and safety strategy and plan.

  • Regularly discuss, align, and report health and safety performance and strategic initiatives to ArcelorMittal senior management.

  • Monitor and analyse health and safety performance data to identify trends and areas for improvement.

  • Responsible for second line assurance of the health and safety system and compliance with laws.

  • Support initiatives to engage employees in health and safety activities (health and safety day, health and safety campaigns, FPS shop floor initiatives, etc.).

  • Follow up on significant accidents and support units to implement corrective and preventive actions.

  • Analyse critical incidents data to identify trends and root causes, and share lessons learned across the organization.

  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and innovations to enhance health and safety performance globally (best practice sharing).

  • Provide guidance, expertise, and support for the North America business units implementing health and safety solutions.

  • Any other duties and responsibilities as may be required.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • H&S 45001 certifications or similar.

  • Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in health and safety management.

  • Valid qualification in occupational health and safety

  • Deep understanding of legal health and safety guidelines

  • Experience of maintaining or reaching externally audited management standards - OHSAS 18001 / ISO 45001

  • Good knowledge of data analysis and risk assessment.

  • Strong data analysis abilities and experience with health and safety management software and tools. (SAP, REX, FPA, etc)

  • Leadership, and strategic planning skills.

  • Good communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience leading a team of individuals that do not report directly to you.

  • Ability to effectively work with people from all global locations and diverse backgrounds.

  • Demonstrated skills in organization, prioritization, time-management, project management and decision-making.

  • Ability to understand and analyse complex information and present it simply and accurately.

Preferred experience:

  • Organizational knowledge:

    • ArcelorMittal health and safety corporate guidelines (FPS, FPA, health and safety standards and pillars).

    • Industry specific experience (steel making process knowledge).

    • ArcelorMittal heath and safety preventive tools.

    • REX / Sara ArcelorMittal corporate system.

    • ArcelorMittal compliance standards.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Engineering, or a related field.

  • Master’s degree preferred.

LANGUAGE

  • Fluent in English - good communication for discussion, presentation, and meetings preparation.

  • Any other language skill is a plus.

OTHER IMPORTANT DETAILS

  • Travel: approximately 30%

  • Location: Schererville – IN, USA.

  • Working conditions: office setting - Monday to Friday with extended hours as required due to periods of peak workloads.
